The 'Moeller Method'

Looking back at SANFORD A. MOELLERx from the 21st Century

om Drums

Moeller techniques, relating to drum set playing, do not address how to play a set of drums directly.  Basically, the knowledge he passed on to Krupa, and his other students, was this ... he gave them a solid foundation consisting of grips, rudimental practice regimes and the up stroke technique (to name a few parts to that foundation).

Linking to the following article extols the benefits of the Moeller '2-Grips' approach, when it comes to playing today's drum kit.  Yes, careful study of his book clearly shows this to be the case.  The following, is an example to view before linking to the 'Moeller method' article ... (or returning to the Vintage Snare Drumming article you have been reading).  Note that the 'little finger grip' has been adjusted so as to play the Hi-Hat in a more delicate manner....

The 'Moeller method' article, ahead (relating to the drum kit), calls attention to learning from Moeller regarding power strokes and the ability to achieve better speed.  Including the above, there are several other video examples.

If one truly learns from Moeller's advice, one will be able to play rim shots and strong backbeats, for example, with much more force.  The ability to use power WITHOUT ending up having to experience a certain amount of pain is also a benefit of the 'Moeller system'.

'Moeller drummers' are also be able to play faster while remaining relaxed; they are also able to play in a tasty & refined fashion as well.  Few seem to recall that Moeller recognized using a 'second grip formula' for rendering the very delicate, lighter 'shadings'.  This is accomplished by using a '2-Grips' method ('thumb fulcrum' and 'little finger fulcrum' ... page 11 of the Moeller book).
